Name of the Project
Australia-Asia Power Link (AAPowerLink).

Location
Northern Territory, Australia.

Project Owner/s
Renewable-energy company SunCable.

Project Description
The project proposes to develop the world’s largest renewable-energy generation and battery energy storage precinct in the heart of the Northern Territory, along with an estimated 5 000 km high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system to deliver up to 6 GW of 24/7 green electricity to industrial customers in Darwin (DarwinLink) and Singapore (SingaporeLink). The DarwinLink is the Australian component of AAPowerLink. The project will establish the world’s largest integrated renewable-energy and storage precinct in the Barkly region of the Northern Territory, as well as an 800 km overhead transmission system to supply up to 4 GW of 24/7 renewable electricity to industrial customers in Darwin. SingaporeLink is the international transmission component of AAPowerLink. It includes a 4 300 km HVDC subsea cable system, from Darwin through Indonesia, to supply Singapore with an estimated 1.75 GW of 24/7 renewable electricity. The project is expected to abate six-million tonnes of CO2 a year, supporting Singapore’s goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create a significant number of jobs in the Northern Territory – 1 750 direct jobs during construction, about 6 800 jobs during every year of construction and about 350 long-term operational jobs. In Indonesia, about
7 500 jobs are expected to be created.

Capital Expenditure
$24-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
A final investment decision on the DarwinLink is expected in 2027. A four-year construction phase will start from 2028.

Latest Developments
SunCable is working with the Indonesian government to agree a route for the subsea cable system to traverse Indonesian waters, following a path of minimal impact on the natural environment.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
